Voice Box
Sep 23, 2024
Have you caught the attention
Of at least one set of ears?
Is there another willing
To engage you and listen?
How do you greet this reception?
Do you value their precious attention?
Or do your words jab and strike,
Trying to land on their target?
Do they narrow and confine
Putting the other into restrictive walls?
Do they preach and justify,
Leaving no space for response?
Does your breath come easily,
Between the sounds flowing out?
What if your words never stopped?
Carried across time and space indefinitely,
Would you be proud of your contribution
To the cacophony of human jibber jabber?
I hope sometimes,
Even if just in your shower,
You use your voice box
To laugh and sing a happy song.
And if you can’t find something nice to say,
Maybe your vocal folds could use a rest.
If this writing stirred something in you—
perhaps it’s your body’s way of asking to be heard.
