When I took my oath
To “Do No Harm”
I was sincere.
I am committed to uphold this principle.
As a doctor
This terrain is rocky.
So much harm has been done
In the name of medicine.
So many times, I’ve seen
Power and greed prevail.
It has become like a monster
Creating illness by seeking it out.
Brave and strong hearts losing hope,
Succumbing to great momentum.
They suffer, they fight, they dissociate
They are addicted, they abuse and are abused,
They bleed, cry, try it all and lose hope.
Sometimes they even die.
And yet,
These magnificent “patient” humans
They heal.
With or without the monster.
So many have healed
Right in front of my eyes.
Why?
What makes us so resilient?
What does it mean to
Do No Harm?
If we each held ourselves
To be:
Precious.
Powerful.
Exquisite.
Unique.
Unlimited.
Healthy.
We would not allow ourselves to
Be harmed.
We would remember our choice,
Our power intact.
Choosing health would collapse
The beast seeking illness to survive.
It would be quick.
He wouldn’t suffer much.
All the brave hearts serving health would be
Allowed to return to their art, together.
