What does this symbol
Mean to you?
Do you know its
Many origin stories?
There is rarely only one—
Especially when it’s about a famous white guy.
We use our religious symbols to
Stand for something else,
Assuming we all understand that
It stands for the same thing.
Does it?
Does it mean the same to me as it does to you?
Does it mean the same to early pagans
As it does to 21st century Christians?
What about the ancient crosses from Africa,
India, Asia, and Indigenous Americas?
How can the same symbol, which has offered
Faith to some and genocide to others
Stand for
Only one thing?
Maybe together we are
Feeling cross?
What has brought this symbol to such power
That it has meaning for so many?
Is there a point at which enough
People focus their energy on it,
That the symbol suddenly takes on a
Life of its own?
Would it become something more
Than just a reflection to us?
Would it leave behind
It’s humble beginnings?
And gain power
Or influence?
Could it become sentient,
Aware of its uniqueness and impact?
Or maybe it started out
Sentient from the start?
Patiently influencing billions of minds
Over millennia.
Gently setting its influence one
Unconscious feeling at a time.
Until a critical mass of understanding
Is met—and the symbol makes full impact.
Whew!
